Making The Musical
Making the Musical is a two week immersion into writing musical theater. Students talk to composers, lyricists, and librettists and playwrights, ranging from up and coming (Sara Cooper, HoT: Helen of Troy, Rona Siddiqui, Salaam Medina: Tales of a Halfghan, ) to midcareer (Gaby Alter, Band Geeks; Daniel and Patrick Lazour, We Live in Cairo) to established authors (Stephen Karam, The Humans; David Yazbek, The Band's Visit) to theatre professors (Michael Wartowsky, Cupcake; Larry Brenner, Saving Throw Versus Love.)
When possible, we also attend shows around Boston! In 2019 we saw We Live in Cairo, The Lightning Thief: The Musical, Cymbeline, and Greater Good.
Simultaneously, students write an original, ten to twenty minute musical. They develop the plot and characters, write the book, and compose songs. The camp culminates in a staged reading of the show. In 2016 the show was A Fairly Scary Fairy Musical- video here. In 2019 it was Journey On, available podcast-style here. Video of some of the scenes is available here. If you just want to rock out to the soundtrack, you can do that here. And if you want to check out the recommendations our speakers had for various songs/books/shows/media to inspire young writers, that's here.
If you are interested in participating in 2020, send Ms. A an email!
